What is a Benami Transaction?

Benami literally means ‘without name’ and in the context of property, it means use and benefit by a person other than the person who is shown as the owner. In such a transaction or arrangement, a property is transferred to or held by one person, while the consideration for such property is provided or paid by another person and property is held for the immediate or future benefit, direct or indirect, of the person providing the consideration.

1. Pakistan ranks 198 of a total 199 countries on the list with a score of 26 points.
2. Pakistanis enjoy visa-free access to only six countries.

1. Under the Bill, employment of children below the age of 14 has been banned.
2. Child labour has been made an offence punishable with up to 6 months’ imprisonment and a fine up to Rs50,000.
3. If a child is employed for a hazardous job, the prison term may be extended up to 3 years with Rs100,000 fine.
4. No establishment or factory could employ a child less than 14. They had to meet strict conditions before employing a child between 14 and 18.

Jan 25: Noted film director Pervaiz Rana died. He was 66.

About Pervaiz Rana

1. Pervaiz Rana was considered one of the finest film directors of the country, especially the Punjabi flicks.
2. He directed more than 200 films including Chiragh Bahadur, Kalu Shah Puriya, Ghunda Tax, Shagna di Mehndi, Naagan, Naseebo, Toofan and Godfather.
3. Of late, he was working on a movie ‘Dushman Rani’.
4. He won wide recognition for his work and was always appreciative of young talent in the film industry.

Jan 25: The government signed 4 agreements worth $2.5 billion for setting up coal-based power plants–a 1,320MW in Hub, Balochistan and a 330MW plant in Thar, Sindh–under the CPEC.

First power project will be completed by August 2019 and the second will come online by December 2019.

Feb 10: The Punjab government stopped collection of the income-based component of agriculture tax through an executive order.

Background

In 2013, the FBR introduced an amendment in Section 111 of the Income Tax Ordinance 2001. The amendment was aimed at cracking down on those who evade income tax by hiding behind agriculture income.

Under the Constitution of Pakistan, income from agriculture is a provincial subject – a lacuna that almost every influential landlord and industrialist exploits to evade taxes by claiming income from the land.

According to the 2013 amendment, money or valuable article owned or funds from which the expenditure was made, by way of agricultural income, such explanation shall be accepted to the extent of agricultural income worked back on the basis of agricultural income tax paid under the relevant provincial law.

Jan 16: A US company SpaceX launched constellation of 10 satellites into orbit on board of its two-stage Falcon 9 Rocket.

2. It is headquartered in Hawthorne, California.
3. It was founded in 2002 by Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors and former PayPal entrepreneur.
4. It was established with the goal of creating the technologies to reduce space transportation costs and enable the colonization of Mars.
5. SpaceX has developed the Falcon 1 (world’s first privately funded, liquid-propellant rocket to reach orbit – in 2008) and Falcon 9 launch vehicles, both designed to be reusable.

Jan 18: World temperatures hit a record high for the third year in a row last year, creeping closer to a ceiling set for global warming with extremes including unprecedented heat in India and ice melt in the Arctic, US government agencies reported.

Highlights

1. Average surface temperatures over land and the oceans were 0.94 degrees Celsius above the 20th-century average of 13.9 degree Celsius last year.
2. Temperatures, lifted both by man-made greenhouse gases and a natural El Niño event that released heat from the Pacific Ocean last year, beat the previous record in 2015, when 200 nations agreed a plan to limit global warming.
3. Among last year’s extreme weather events, wildfires in Alberta were the costliest natural disaster in Canada’s history while Phalodi, in western India, recorded a temperature of 51oC on May 19, a national record.
4. North America also had its warmest year on record, the Great Barrier Reef off Australia suffered severe damage from rising temperatures, and sea ice in both the Arctic Ocean and around Antarctica is at record lows for mid-January.

About CEPI

1. CEPI is a public-private alliance to finance and coordinate the development of new vaccines to prevent and contain infectious disease epidemics.
2. It plans to develop early phases of vaccines without knowing the details for the form in which the deadly infection will appear but to cut down the time to tailor the eventual vaccine to be effective to epidemic.
3. CEPI’s plan includes preparations for possible outbreaks of Marburg fever, Lassa fever, MERS, SARS, Nipah virus, Rift Valley fever, chikungunya and others.

1. The TPP is a trade agreement under negotiation among 12 Pacific Rim nations accounting for 40% of the world economy.
2. It was promoted by US and signed by 12 countries in 2015.
3. 12 members are: Australia, Brunei, Chile, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, US and Vietnam.
4. It aimed to ease the flow of goods, services and investments among member countries and set trade rules for 21st century especially on labour standards, environmental issues, origin criteria and intellectual property.
5. The mega trade deal was considered a counterweight to growing global economic clout of China, the largest economy in the Pacific Rim.

Jan 24: A team of British and Czech scientists successfully tested a super laser, named “Bivoj” after a mythical Czech strongman. It is said to be 10 times more powerful than any other of its kind on the planet.

Weighing in at around 20 tonnes and costing 44 million euros ($48 million), Bivoj will have applications in the aeronautics, automotive and power sectors.
