An Admirable Step
In our educational system, students, unfortunately, are trained only for getting good grades in exam; they are not encouraged to participate in co- and extracurricular activities. Our students prefer to work hard, not smart, and that’s why we are not able to compete at international level. To overcome this problem, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Campus Khairpur Mir’s has taken an admirable step by opening Mehran University Civil Engineers Society Khairpur. The purpose and vision of this society is to organise events like seminars, workshops and other activities related to the engineering field. Benefit of these types of societies is to entertain students and get them out of life of “cramming” only. After passing out, grades will not be memory, events will be. It’s a laudable step and many of our fellow students have also appreciated it a lot.

Gender Equality
Gender equality is the key to achieving peace, prosperity and political stability. The women are facing the menace of gender inequality and gender discrimination in Pakistan. They are being persecuted and oppressed in almost all parts of the country. State and private institutions are dominated by men who receive lion’s share in political and economic affairs as well. Contrarily, the women are facing sexual harassment, honour-killings, physical and psychological violence in our society. Mukhtaran Mai was gang-raped and Malala Yusufzai, who has been promoting female education, was shot in the head.
The government must take practical measures to eliminate gender inequality. It should facilitate and encourage women’s participation in the mainstream politics. Economic conditions of women must also be improved by recruiting more women in public and private sectors.

Xmas Train
It was like a whiff of fresh air when I heard the news that Pakistan Railways has launched a special Christmas train for Christians for 15 days. This is a highly encouraging step as it will not only provide a sense of protection and freedom to our minority communities but will also present a soft image of Pakistan before the world.

Good Governance and National Prosperity
Not economic growth but the quality of governance is the prerequisite for national advancement. A country, having a very high per capita income, might not be successful or not make strides in term of good governance; while country with lower GDP may achieve great successes in terms of the quality of good governance. So, to claim success in all dimensions of national advancement, nations have to achieve the highest degree of good governance.
Presently, the economic growth of Pakistan is progressive according to the incumbent government. But, we have not bettered our quality of good governance. Weak governance has cut short the trade and foreign investment in the country. The frequent incidences of terror attacks in different parts of the country suck up the confidence of businessmen and industrialists. The abduction of foreign workers and their brutal killings also add fuel to the fire. So, economic growth and national prosperity remain an elusive dream.
Countries all over the world, especially those in East Asia, are introducing pieces of legislation to thwart the occurrence of corruption. Anti-corruption crusades are already being fought in China and Philippines. Pakistan also needs to bring radical reforms in this regard.
Pakistan must bring all those involved in corruption and misappropriation of funds to justice. Their punishment must be death or, if it’s not possible, then a life imprisonment, at least.

Chikungunya in Karachi
Karachi is the biggest city of Pakistan but if we have a glance over its present-day conditions, it seems that it’s no more a city of lights rather it’s a dark city. The people of Karachi, who had suffered for a long time due to terrorism and target killings, are now falling prey to a disease called chikungunya. The doctors say that this disease is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes. It causes fever and severe joint pain. Other symptoms include muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue and rash. Joint pain is often debilitating and can vary in duration. Nearly 800 Karachiites a day have to seek medical treatment against this menacing illness. If the government evades its responsibility of taking serious steps against the virus, it may affect the whole city and may also spread to other parts of Pakistan. I request the government and concerned authorities to take serious actions.
