On June 20 last, at a well-attended mega event in Karachi Marriot, Intel Pakistan unveiled a range of products powered by its 22 nanometer 3rd generation Ivy Bridge processors.
People from different walks of life had thronged the venue to have a look at the much awaited Ultrabook- a superlative version of the existing laptop- and experience the amazing difference. To their utter amazement, they had a machine of their dreams right in front of their eyes and the lucky ones also got a chance to handle them.
While the visitors registered themselves and headed towards the hall, Intel Country Manager Pakistan, Naveed Siraj, greeted them with a conspicuous smile beaming on his face. Today he was going to put something on display about which he had talked at length in a newspaper interview. At that time it was a dream but now a reality. What he said about Ultrabook is mentioned below as backgrounder:
It’s going to be an ultra thin and ultra light notebook highly efficient on speed, responsiveness, productivity and what not. Its battery life would be around 11 to 12 hours. The concept is to revolutionize the field of mobile internet connectivity where the concept of chargers, wires and cables is almost non-existent. As Intel’s in-house social anthropologists put it, Ultrabook is the reflection of one’s self. As one always longs for perfection, this machine is a bid to achieve the goal of near perfection.’
Concept
This aspect has a lot to do with the lifestyle, stress level and productivity of a user. As Naveed Siraj recalls, seven years ago he had to wait for ages for his computer to boot. By the time it would be ready, he would have smoked a couple of cigarettes. Stress would be another thing if he was short of time and the task urgent.
Security
Ease and comfort
At less than an inch thick, it is lightweight and highly portable Ultrabook is easy to grab and go anywhere. It can run for hours, and standby period can last for days. Just imagine going through security check at airports with Ultrabook held close to your chest like a file cover while others going through the endless exercise of taking their laptops out of their bags and putting them in front of scanners. You don’t need to carry young in a bag with batteries and chargers. The battery is strong to last through the longest of journeys.
Connectivity
Improvement on architecture
- Standard on thinness: Display has gone from a standard 5mm to a thin 3mm.
- Standard on battery life: Battery has gone from an 18mm cylindrical to a flat 6.5mm lithium polymer.
- Hard drive has gone from 9.5mm to 7mm.
- Innovation on motherboard design. From a motherboard with a socket for the PGA package, we have moved to a thinner soldered down BGA solution.
- Thermal solution was reduced from 9mm to 6mm thanks to the 17W processor.
- And for the 18mm Ultrabook system, we opted out on an Optical Disk Drive.
So the innovation has led to inches going to millimeters.
