Nouns:

Nouns perform different functions in English. These are often described as referring to persons, places, things (anything we can think of) states.
Excerpt: means a passage or quotation taken or selected from a book, document, letter, etc.
Here are the excerpts from the letters written by Allama Iqbal.

Malediction: a curse, the utterance of a curse.
What have I to fear from your malediction since this treasure has been given to me?

Octogenarian: is a person who is between 80 or 90 years old.
We have members of all ages including active and healthy octogenarians.

Perturbation: mental disquiet, disturbance.
The girl was really perturbed of the way her mother was reacting with her sickness

Despondence: means depression of spirits from loss of courage or hope; dejection.
The feeling of despondence overwhelmed himself after his failure in the army test.

Phrasal verbs:

A phrasal verb consists of two parts: the base verb and one or more additional words usually referred to as particles (small word that can function as adverb or preposition).

Put up with means to tolerate.  ‘Put’ is the base verb and ‘up with’ are additional words that modify the normal meaning of the base word.
She puts up with a lot of insult from her boss.

Takes after means resembles.
She takes after her mother.

Fall down means to disappoint, to fail, to perform disappointedly.
He was doing well in the exams until he fell down in his last theory exam.

Wear off means to diminish slowly and gradually or to diminish in effect.
The pain began to wear off after the injection.
Wear thin means to become less appealing, less interesting\weaken.
My patience is wearing thin. Now stop this game.

Idiomatic Phrase:

An idiomatic phrase is a group of words that do not mean what they appear to mean or their meaning in not exactly the meaning which exists in dictionary.

Cross my mind is a tricky idiomatic expression. It means to remember.

It never crossed my mind to buy a wrist watch.
Take to heart: It means to take something seriously or personally, or upset by.
I didn’t have the idea that you will take my comments about your    personality to heart.
Give a hand:  this means to help a person.

Let me give you a hand in arranging these chairs.

Turn over a new leaf: This means to start over from scratch and become a better person\to make fresh start.

Every New Year we make resolutions to turn over a new leaf.

Couch potato: It’s an interesting idiom and appears as if we are talking about an edible but it means a lazy person who is addicted to television.

He knows the schedule of each and every TV channel as he is a couch potato.
