Politics of Sindh

Sindh seems experiencing a political vacuum. Political leadership in Sindh, led by PPP, has miserably failed to deliver. Rampant corruption, stalled agricultural progress and declined delivery of modern education vividly reflect political failure of Zardari’s government in the province. KP and Punjab are the centres of multifaceted development in almost all sectors.

Both PTI and PML-N are involved in a competition of development to triumph in 2018 elections and they have put all-out efforts that directly benefit the people of both the provinces.

This all seems lacking in political rulers of Sindh. The dangers are inevitable to both rulers and the ruled. Favouritism, nepotism and other vices must be ended.

Hepatitis in Balochistan

This letter is aimed at drawing the attention of concerned authorities of Balochistan to the spread of Hepatitis B and C in rural areas of the province. An acute lack of treatment facilitates and that of access to hospitals have further aggravated the situation. It is unfortunate that healthcare sector in Balochsitan is not up to the mark. If urgent measures are not taken, this disease would devour many lives.

Awareness seminars should be held to create awareness among the masses on this fatal disease. These awareness programmes would encourage people to have complete checkups regularly.

ICC Champions Trophy 2017

Pakistan gave an outstanding performance against the Indian team in the Champions Trophy final. Pakistan was ranked eighth before the tournament, beginning their campaign as underdogs. Their loss against Indian in the first match dented the hopes of Pakistani fans. Given this scenario, their victory is indeed fabulous. I cannot forget the words of Nasir Husain, who, after the dropped catch of Virat Kohli and his dismissal on the very next delivery said, “Pakistan cricket at its best. One minute down, next minute up!”

Muhammad Zeeshan Butt (Narowal)

The Ignored Balochi Language

Mother tongue plays a key role in the progress of a nation, but regrettably, Balochi, despite being the native language of Balochistan, has been ignored since long. As a result, thousands of students are not able to read and write Balochi properly. It reflects serious negligence on the part of provincial government. There is a pressing need to implement policies to make Balochi a compulsory subject at educational institutions of the province.

Countering the Thalassaemia Challenge

During the recent years, there has been an ominous rise in the number of thalassaemia patients in Pakistan. It is an inherited blood disorder in which the body makes an abnormal form of hemoglobin. If one or both of the parents of a child are carriers of thalassemia, there is a strong likelihood that (s)he will inherit a serious form of the disease. The situation of thalassaemia in Pakistan is extremely grave as it is the most prevalent genetic blood disorder in the country at present. Some estimates suggest that every year as many as 5000 children in Pakistan are born with thalassaemia, The biggest factor behind this killer disease is the cousin marriages which are very common in Pakistan.

This killer disease can be defeated only with preventive measures. The most important measure could be a simple blood test of would-be bride and groom before marriage. This can be done through the enactment of law, like it was done in most Islamic and other states where once Thalassaemia was widespread. I suggest that a provision should be added to the Nikahanama to record blood test reports, and if the person conducting a Nikah does not attach the report with the marriage form, he should be awarded strict punishment. An early action in this regard can save our future generations from thalassaemia.
