Oct 09: <\/strong>A joint study of the World Bank and Unicef, titled \u2018Ending extreme poverty: A focus on children,\u2019 revealed that half the world\u2019s extremely poor are children and almost 385 million children were living in extreme poverty in 2013.<\/p>\n

Highlights <\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. Nine out of 10 of those children lived in just 20 countries.<\/li>\n
  2. The study marks South Asia, including Pakistan, as the second worst in the world, with nearly 36 per cent children living in extreme poverty.<\/li>\n
  3. More than 30pc of the children living in extreme poverty live in India alone.<\/li>\n
  4. Children are most at risk of living in extreme poverty in countries that have experienced conflict.<\/li>\n
  5. In 2013, 19.5pc of children in 89 countries were living in households that survived on an average of $1.90 a day per person or less, compared to just 9.2pc of adults.<\/li>\n
  6. The study warns that \u2018neglecting children fails to build the human capital needed for sustained economic prosperity in today\u2019s world\u2019.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Oct 09: <\/strong>Russia vetoed a French-drafted resolution, in the UN Security Council, demanding an immediate halt to the bombing campaign that the Syrian government and Russia are carrying out against rebel-held districts in Aleppo.<\/p>\n

    The rival Russian draft which made no mention of a bombing halt was rejected because it failed to get the minimum nine “yes” votes needed for approval by the 15-member council.<\/p>\n
