Rajya Sabha, on July 30, passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, outlawing Triple Talaq. The bill was tabled in the upper house for debate and passage by Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. The bill, which criminalises the practice of instant divorce the Muslim community, has already been passed by the Lok Sabha.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

February 5, 2016:<\/strong> <\/span>Supreme Court asks then\u00a0Attorney General Mukul Rohotgi for assistance\u00a0on appeals challenging constitutional validity of\u00a0\u201cTriple Talaq.\u201d<\/p>\n

June 29, 2016:<\/strong><\/span> The Supreme Court assures\u00a0that the practice of \u201ctriple talaq\u201d among\u00a0Muslims will be tested on the \u201ctouchstone of\u00a0constitutional framework.\u201d<\/p>\n

October 7, 2016:<\/strong> <\/span>The Centre opposes the\u00a0practice of triple talaq in Supreme Court and\u00a0said there is a need to re-look at these practices\u00a0on grounds of gender equality and secularism.<\/p>\n

December 9, 2016:<\/strong> <\/span>The Allahabad High\u00a0Court, in a verdict, stopped short of calling the\u00a0practice of triple talaq under Muslim law\u00a0unconstitutional but observed that personal\u00a0laws could not override constitutionally\u00a0guaranteed rights of individuals.<\/p>\n

February 16, 2017:<\/strong><\/span> The Supreme Court\u00a0announces the setting up of a five-judge<\/p>\n

constitutional bench to hear and deliberate on\u00a0the challenges against the practice of \u2018triple\u00a0talaq, nikah halala\u2019 and polygamy.<\/p>\n

March 27, 2017:<\/strong><\/span> The All India Muslim\u00a0Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) told the Supreme\u00a0Court that the issue of triple talaq falls outside\u00a0the judiciary\u2019s realm and that these issues\u00a0should not be touched by court.<\/p>\n

April 11,2017:<\/strong><\/span> The Centre tells the Supreme\u00a0Court the practices in question deny Muslim\u00a0women the fundamental rights which were\u00a0guaranteed to them by the Indian constitution.<\/p>\n

April 18, 2017:<\/strong> <\/span>Attorney general Mukul\u00a0Rohatgi said practice of triple talaq should not\u00a0be allowed as women have as much right as\u00a0men and cannot be treated on a lower pedestal.<\/p>\n

May 3, 2017:<\/strong> <\/span>Top court permits senior lawyer\u00a0and Congress leader Salman Khurshid as\u00a0amicus curiae to hear challenging constitutional\u00a0validity of Triple Talaq.<\/p>\n

May 18, 2017:<\/strong> <\/span>Apex court reserves its\u00a0verdict on a number of appeals challenging<\/p>\n

constitutional validity of instant Triple\u00a0Talaq practices.<\/p>\n

August 22, 2017:<\/strong><\/span> After reading separate\u00a0judgements, SC rules in 3:2 majority<\/p>\n

that the practice is illegal. It also asks Centre to\u00a0frame a law.<\/p>\n

December 2017:<\/strong><\/span> The Muslim Women\u00a0(Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017\u00a0was passed in the Lok Sabha which made triple\u00a0talaq a aunishable offence with a jail term of\u00a0up to three years.<\/p>\n

Between January and August 2018:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Parliament sessions were a washout because of\u00a0which the Bill was not tabled in Parliament.<\/p>\n

August 9, 2018:<\/strong><\/span> The Union Cabinet clears\u00a0the amendments to the bill, which includes the\u00a0provision of granting bail to the men found\u00a0guilty of giving instant triple talaq. Also, the\u00a0complaints in a triple talaq case can be filed\u00a0only by the victim (wife) or a bleed relative. The\u00a0magistrate is given the power to grant bail with<\/p>\n

certain terms and conditions.<\/p>\n

August 10, 2018:<\/strong> <\/span>The Bill is presented in\u00a0the Rajya Sabha during the monsoon session of\u00a0Parliament but the government is unable to\u00a0pass the Bill citing lack of consensus in the\u00a0House. The bill is postponed to the Winter\u00a0Session of Parliament.<\/p>\n

August 15, 2018: PM Narendra Modi in his\u00a0Independence Day speech blamed the<\/p>\n

Opposition for the delay in the passage of the\u00a0triple talaq bill in the Upper House.<\/p>\n

September 19, 2018:<\/strong><\/span> The Narendra\u00a0Modi-led Union Cabinet approves an ordinance\u00a0making instant triple talaq a punishable offence\u00a0with a three-year jail term.<\/p>\n

December 31, 2018:<\/strong><\/span> Opposition stalls the\u00a0bill in Rajya Sabha, days after it was passed in\u00a0the Upper House. The Opposition demanded\u00a0that the bill be scrutinised by the select panel.<\/p>\n

June 20, 2019:<\/strong><\/span> president Ram Nath Kovind\u00a0addresses joint session of Parliament, calls upon\u00a0all parties to unite in getting legislation making\u00a0Triple Talaq a punishable offence cleared.<\/p>\n
