It was against the odds, and it was difficult, but living up to the title it seems to revel in, Pakistan has truly been unpredictable. Kudos to minnows Pakistan for an outstanding show against a formidable Indian team!
The final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 reinforces the perception that Pakistan are a highly unpredictable team. On a good day, we can defeat the best team in the cricketing circuit and, on a bad day, we can crumble even against novices. And, this impression is a testament to the extraordinary cricketing talent Pakistan is blessed with.
Pakistani team has spontaneity, feverish passion, great skills, and yet, there is always the knowledge that things can spiral out of control anytime. The nature of the ball was blamed, some even dissed the rain — whatever the reason, no one was swinging it. Except Pakistan! Rohit Sharma got to great starts in the tournament but was stunned by the in-swinger from Mohammad Amir. English batsmen thought they had the ODI cricket sorted out but were foxed by the reverse-swinging deliveries from Hasan Ali.
Ultimately, Pakistan’s cricket team is celebrated not just because it triumphs against the odds. The unstable conditions back home, the lack of international cricket in the country, the apathy of Pakistan Cricket Board and the absence of a proper system in place stack up the adversities faced by our team. But Pakistani team is celebrated essentially because its players raise the sport to dizzying levels — leaving us with a lingering feeling of having witnessed something really special. Sport often panders to the parochial, but Pakistan is a team that can elevate those who watch it. Ultimately, that’s why sport matters.
